Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge reaffirmed the party’s commitment to overcome recent setbacks in the Hindi heartland states of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, expressing gratitude to Telangana voters for electing Congress with a majority. Kharge outlined the party’s resolve to fully prepare for the upcoming 2024 national elections alongside its allies in the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).
In a post-election statement, Kharge acknowledged the disappointing performance in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seized power in these states. He extended thanks to supporters in all three states, including Madhya Pradesh, emphasizing the party’s determination to rebuild and revive.
While the BJP retained power in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress secured a victory in Telangana. The focus now shifts to the 2024 national polls, with the BJP aiming to maintain control at the Centre, and the Congress participating as part of the 28-party INDIA bloc.
The election results from these four states, contributing 82 representatives to the Lok Sabha, are expected to influence seat-sharing negotiations within the INDIA bloc. Kharge acknowledged the spirited campaign undertaken by Congress in all four states and appreciated the efforts of party workers.
“We will overcome temporary setbacks and prepare ourselves fully for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections along with the INDIA parties,” stated Kharge.
In the state-wise breakdown, the BJP led in Chhattisgarh with 54 of 90 seats, while the Congress held 36. Madhya Pradesh witnessed the BJP leading on 166 of 230 seats, with the Congress ahead on 63. In Rajasthan, the BJP led on 115 of 199 constituencies, and the Congress on 69. Telangana showcased the Congress leading on 63 of 119 constituencies.
As the political landscape unfolds, the Congress, undeterred by recent losses, sets its sights on strategic preparations for the upcoming national elections.
