Dubai, UAE – The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) took center stage at COP28, organizing an unprecedented panel discussion at the Climate Live Pavilion. Focused on the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the session delved into its implications for India and featured global assessments shared by Prof Jim Skea, IPCC Chair.

Prof Skea provided vital insights into the projected impact of climate change on India, emphasizing the urgent need for mitigation efforts. Addressing attendees, Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General of TERI, highlighted the historical partnership between TERI and IPCC, underlining the integration of sustainability into the institute’s ethos.

The discussion addressed the challenges outlined in the IPCC’s latest assessment, with a specific focus on the report ‘Practices and Solutions: Accelerating Indian Industry Decarbonisation.’ Signatory Indian companies presented voluntary actions and key achievements toward near-zero emissions by 2050.

Industry leaders engaged in a dialogue on the implications of AR6 findings, exploring opportunities for India to embrace an inclusive and green development pathway. Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco Industries Ltd., stressed the importance of discussing storage mechanisms, including exploring nuclear solutions to address carbon issues.

Abanti Sankaranarayanan, Chief Group Public Affairs (India & International) and Group Sustainability at Mahindra Group, discussed the bold steps required for electric vehicle adoption in India. Mahendra Singhi, MD & CEO of Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd., highlighted the coexistence of profitability and sustainability, sharing Dalmia Cement’s success in achieving a low carbon footprint.

Koushik Chatterjee, Executive Director & CFO of Tata Steel Ltd., emphasized the role of public policy in facilitating decarbonization and the critical nature of carbon markets and pricing.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Arupendra Nath Mullick, Vice President of TERI Council for Business Sustainability.
