In the anticipation of the T20 World Cup, former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel sheds light on the challenges faced by the Indian cricket team in forming the ideal squad. With key players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah missing the T20I series against South Africa, Patel emphasizes the difficulty of identifying the perfect blend of players ahead of the World Cup.

India, coming off a 4-1 victory against Australia, has maintained continuity in its T20I squad, relying on a youthful team for the upcoming series in South Africa. The absence of senior players like Kohli, Sharma, and Bumrah raises concerns about the team’s readiness for the T20 World Cup, given the limited international fixtures remaining before the IPL and the global tournament.

Parthiv Patel underscores India’s historic challenge of determining the right combination, particularly in the T20 format. With only one more T20I series against Afghanistan scheduled after the South Africa tour, the team confronts a time crunch to finalize the squad for the 2024 Indian Premier League.

“India’s biggest challenge to me has always been finding that right combination, especially in the T20 format. And we don’t have games. Now we are talking about just three Afghanistan games if at all Virat or Rohit or Bumrah play in that. So I think it is something which India will have to take into account,” said Patel during a discussion on Cricbuzz.

The former cricketer points out the dilemma faced by the team management, needing to strike a balance between selecting players based on IPL performance and announcing the squad midway through the tournament.

“I think they are looking at more options by going with this young squad. There is no lack of supply of talent in India. A problem of plenty is still a problem, and we have to find the right combination,” adds Patel.

Furthermore, Patel addresses the uncertainty surrounding the team’s leadership, emphasizing that the question of who will captain India in the next T20 World Cup contributes to the complexity of the selection process. As speculations circulate about Rahul Dravid’s coaching role and the captaincy, India grapples with finding the right balance ahead of the global T20 showdown.
