New Delhi:In a significant move, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification mandating that all new trucks manufactured on or after October 1, 2025, must be equipped with air-conditioned cabins for drivers. The gazette notification states that vehicles falling under N2 and N3 categories must comply with this regulation.
The ministry emphasized that the testing of cabins fitted with air-conditioning systems should adhere to the IS14618:2022 standard. This announcement follows the approval of a draft notification in July by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing issues related to the working conditions of truck drivers.
Expressing concern over drivers working in extreme heat conditions, Gadkari stressed the need for air-conditioned cabins in trucks, despite objections citing potential cost increases. The move aims to enhance the well-being and comfort of truck drivers, acknowledging their pivotal role in the transport sector.
