New Delhi, In a strategic move, an Indian warship, INS Kadmatt, has arrived in Manila during heightened tensions between the Philippines and China. The Chinese aggressive maneuvers in defiance of international norms have sparked concerns in the region.

Indian Ambassador to the Philippines, Shambhu Kumaran, utilized the docking of INS Kadmatt for a “goodwill visit” to underscore the robust bilateral relations between India and the Philippines, both being democracies. “We have a shared interest in the peace and stability of the region,” he stated, expressing India’s support for the Philippines in ensuring maritime activities adhere to international norms.

Amidst the escalating tensions, INS Kadmatt is scheduled to participate in a “maritime partnership exercise” with the Philippine Navy’s offshore patrol vessel, BRP Ramon, in the South China Sea. This move signifies India’s commitment to strengthening military ties with ASEAN countries, particularly in response to China’s territorial disputes with its neighbors.

India’s focus on countering China’s influence is evident as it expands military cooperation with ASEAN nations. In addition to the ongoing maritime exercise, India is set to supply BrahMos missiles to the Philippines under a $375 million contract. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized India’s commitment to freedom of navigation and adherence to international norms.

At a recent ASEAN defense minister’s meeting-plus in Jakarta, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh urged collaboration among ASEAN countries and their dialogue partners to ensure peace, prosperity, and security in the region. Emphasizing adherence to international norms, Singh highlighted the significance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982.
