New Delhi:In a significant move, the Rajya Sabha has passed the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2023, with a voice vote, paving the way to abolish 76 redundant and obsolete laws. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal lauded the bill’s approval, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing the ease of living and doing business.

The bill, already approved by the Lok Sabha during the monsoon session on July 27, targets the repeal of laws deemed outdated, including the Land Acquisition (Mines) Act, 1885, and the Telegraph Wires (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1950. It further aims to eliminate certain recent Appropriation Acts.

Minister Meghwal emphasized that the Modi government has repealed a total of 1,486 defunct laws since assuming power in 2014. With the addition of 76 more laws under the current bill, the count now reaches 1,562. The passage of this bill aligns with the government’s larger initiative to streamline legal frameworks and contribute to the ease of living for citizens and businesses.
