In a recent study by Motilal Oswal on Wealth Creation spanning 2018-2023, Vodafone Idea emerges as the largest wealth destroyer, wiping off Rs 1.34 lakh crore over the past five years. The telecom operator faced financial challenges, primarily related to adjusted gross revenue (AGR), leading to concerns about the sustainability of its operations.

Top 5 Wealth Destroyers:

1. Vodafone Idea (Vi) – Rs 1.34 lakh crore

2. Yes Bank – Rs 58,900 crore

3. IOCL – Amount not specified

4. Indiabulls Housing – Amount not specified

5. IndusInd Bank – Amount not specified

Sector-wise Wealth Destruction:

– Financial Sector: Contributed 29% to total wealth destruction

– Telecom, Oil & Gas, Consumer, and Retail: Largest contributors to wealth destruction

The study revealed that the total wealth destroyed amounted to Rs 17 trillion, equivalent to 25% of the wealth created by the top 100 companies. Notably, the financial sector, despite being a significant wealth destroyer, also played a substantial role in wealth creation during the period.

Vodafone Idea’s financial woes were linked to AGR-related issues, resulting in a significant financial burden and uncertainty about the company’s viability. The government intervened earlier this year to rescue Vodafone Idea from its debt, converting a portion of interest dues into equity.

While Vi managed to avert collapse, investors suffered losses, with the stock falling approximately 39.90% over the past five years. The study also highlighted other major wealth destroyers, such as Yes Bank, Indiabulls Housing, and IndusInd Bank, shedding light on the challenges faced by these entities.
