In a significant move to foster openness and global engagement, Iran has lifted visa requirements for citizens of 33 countries, including India and Gulf States. The decision aims to boost tourism arrivals and promote cultural exchange. With this development, the total number of nations exempt from visa requirements has now reached 45.

“The unilateral cancellation of visas, in line with priorities set by the ministry, was ratified today in the government session,” stated Ezzatollah Zarghami, Iranian Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts.

Zarghami added, “The government intends to open the country’s doors to the world… And this decision is both courageous and deliberate by the government.”

This decision is expected to enhance global tourism and exemplifies Iran’s commitment to fostering international relations. The move aligns with similar initiatives by other nations, including India, which has recently been added to visa-exemption lists of several countries.

As per the Ministry of External Affairs, India already has a visa-exemption arrangement with Iran, primarily benefiting diplomats. However, this marks a significant development as it includes ordinary Indian passport holders in the list of individuals exempt from visa requirements by Tehran.

Over recent months, many countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, have included India in their visa-exemption lists. Additionally, Kenya recently announced the abolition of visa requirements for all travelers, irrespective of their home country.
