NEW DELHI: In a bid to streamline interstate bus travel, a new Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) is set to be constructed near the Delhi airport. The lack of dedicated stands or parking spaces for interstate buses has prompted this initiative to provide direct connectivity for travelers.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has proposed an intermodal transport hub near the Aerocity Metro station, including an Airport ISBT as a primary facility to cater to long-distance interstate passengers. In a letter to the transport department, DIAL highlighted the need for such an integrated transport hub for efficient intermodal integration.
The proposed airport ISBT aims to be a state-of-the-art facility for operating interstate luxury buses, serving airport passengers effectively. Currently, the absence of organized facilities for buses heading to Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, or Uttarakhand results in buses waiting outside the airport or incurring substantial fees to park within the premises.
The transport department is examining the proposal, and permission is pending. DIAL intends to develop and operate the airport ISBT, serving inter-state buses, either directly or through a nominee or concessionaire. The facilities’ capital cost will be incurred by DIAL or its concessionaire.
The proposed ISBT, situated near the Aerocity metro station, is expected to function as a multimodal transport hub, integrating bus, metro, and air services. It aims to enhance facilities for bus travelers, offering free shuttle services between airport terminals. State-owned and private buses will be able to operate from this terminal, adhering to transport department regulations.
This development seeks to improve the overall travel experience for those arriving or departing from the airport. DIAL has provided basic information about the project through presentations to transport department officials.
