A 12-hour Bharat Bandh called by Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan (ASA) demanding recognition for the ‘Sarna’ religion in the census, led to disruptions in train services and vehicular movements in West Bengal and Jharkhand.

ASA enforced a “Rail Roko” protest, blocking railway tracks in western districts like Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, West Midnapore, and Adra. The demonstration resulted in cancellations and diversions of several trains, including the Godda weekly Express and Tatanagar-Ara Express.

The Ranchi-Howrah Vande Bharat Express was held up at Purulia, and multiple trains faced delays at Asansol. Hatia-Kharagpur Express was canceled for the day, and Hatia-Tatanagar Express was diverted. The protest also extended to blocking roads in various locations.

The demand for a separate code for the ‘Sarna’ religion underscores the ongoing challenges faced by tribal communities in India. The agitation impacted travel plans for many commuters and drew attention to the need for dialogue on issues affecting tribal identities.
