Chennai, In a move that could disrupt government bus services in Tamil Nadu from January 9 onwards, transport workers’ unions have declared an indefinite strike leading up to the Pongal festival.

The unions have articulated six primary demands, including a push for better pay through the 15th wage revision agreement, filling vacant bus driver and conductor positions, financial support from the state government for all eight state-run transport corporations, and the release of pending dearness allowances for pensioners.

Despite a second round of talks held in Chennai on Wednesday between union representatives and transport authorities, a resolution could not be reached. A Soundararajan, CITU leader, expressed dissatisfaction with the officials’ response, stating, “They (officials) once again sought more time.”
