Chennai, In a significant operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) confiscated 11 kg of gold valued at Rs 6.6 crore from eight male passengers arriving in Chennai from Sri Lanka on two different flights. Acting on intelligence, DRI personnel conducted searches on passengers from both Air India and IndiGo flights, detaining four individuals from each aircraft under suspicion.

During interrogation, the detained passengers admitted to concealing gold in their rectums. The gold, in paste form, amounted to a total seizure of 11 kg. DRI officials suspect the gold’s origin to be Dubai, and they believe a smuggling syndicate attempted to bring the precious metal into the country through Sri Lanka.

This seizure underscores the ongoing challenges authorities face in curbing illegal activities related to gold smuggling. The DRI is expected to continue its investigations into the source and network behind this attempt.
