New Delhi, In a bold move, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has announced its intention to challenge the suspension imposed by the Sports Ministry, following the alleged violations of the National Sports Code and the WFI constitution. The suspension, issued on December 24, came just three days after the Federation conducted its elections.

WFI President, Sanjay Singh, expressed strong dissent against the suspension, stating that the Federation would contest the government’s decision in court next week. He criticized the ad-hoc panel formed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to oversee daily operations and highlighted the adverse impact on the sport, especially in the selection of the Indian team for the upcoming Zagreb Open.

Singh emphasized the importance of a properly functioning federation, citing recent decisions by the ad-hoc panel that left certain weight categories unrepresented in the Zagreb Open. He questioned the lack of trials for certain wrestlers and called for transparency in the selection process.

Simultaneously, the WFI has called for an Executive Committee meeting on January 16 to address the ongoing situation. The meeting agenda includes discussions on interpreting certain provisions of the constitution, the formation of the ad-hoc panel, and the hosting of the National Championships in various age groups.

Singh asserted the WFI’s commitment to a democratic process and transparent selection, stating that the suspension is unacceptable as the Federation was elected democratically. The legal challenge is set to be initiated next week.
