Islamabad, In a significant turn of events, Pakistan’s Senate passed a resolution seeking a delay in the general election initially scheduled for February 8. The resolution, tabled by independent Senator Dilawar Khan, received widespread support in the upper house of Pakistan’s Parliament.

Senator Khan cited harsh cold weather in most areas of the country and raised concerns about the security situation as reasons for the delay. He pointed out the challenging law and order scenario, with politicians and security forces being targeted in various regions.

However, Information Minister Murtaza Solangi and Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party opposed the move. The resolution’s passage, with only 14 lawmakers in attendance, goes against the Supreme Court’s clear orders to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to stick to the announced election date.

This unexpected development is anticipated to heighten political and economic instability in the country. The Pakistan Stock Exchange responded negatively to the resolution, witnessing an immediate fall of more than 800 points.
