The committee spearheaded by former president Ram Nath Kovind, focusing on the ‘One Nation, One Election’ concept, is actively seeking public input. In its second meeting, the committee engaged with members of the Law Commission, which is concurrently examining the feasibility of simultaneous elections.

The committee, established in September last year, has extended an invitation to the general public to contribute suggestions aimed at refining the existing legal and administrative framework. Suggestions can be submitted in writing through the website onoe.gov.in or via email at [email protected]. The deadline for submissions is January 15, and all received suggestions by this date will be considered by the committee.

Since its formation, the committee has held two meetings, including discussions with political parties at both the national and state levels. Notably, former president Kovind has been a vocal supporter of the proposal, urging all political parties to rally behind the idea in the national interest.

The committee, comprising key figures such as Home Minister Amit Shah, former Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, and others, aims to examine and recommend changes to enable simultaneous elections for the House of the People (Lok Sabha), state legislative assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats. This involves a careful evaluation of the existing constitutional framework, the Representation of the People Act, 1950, the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and other relevant laws.

The ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative is a significant undertaking, and the committee is actively seeking diverse perspectives to inform its recommendations. As part of this effort, the public’s input is considered invaluable, and the committee encourages citizens to actively participate in shaping this transformative proposal.
