In a historic moment, 21-year-old Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, the youngest Member of Parliament in 170 years, delivered her inaugural speech, capturing hearts with a powerful rendition of the ‘Maori Haka.’ The video of this cultural homage has gone viral, showcasing Maipi-Clarke’s deep connection to her Maori roots.

In a stirring address, she pledged unwavering commitment to her constituents, proclaiming, “I will die for you… but I will [also] live for you.”

Maipi-Clarke revisited segments of her Te Petihana anniversary speech, resonating amidst the government’s recent intentions to restrict the use of the Treaty and te reo Māori in legislative matters, as reported by the New Zealand Herald.

Reflecting on the government’s policies affecting her world, she expressed personal impact, questioning, “How can I not take anything personally when it feels like these policies were made about me?”

Her commitment extends beyond the political realm, delivering a heartfelt message to her electorate, stating, “To Hauraki-Waikato, I am at your service in and outside of Parliament. I will die for you in these chambers, but I will live for you outside these four walls.”

Embracing her role as a kaitiaki (guardian) for Maori language, land, and tradition, Maipi-Clarke sees herself as part of a new generation of Maori voices that need to be heard.

Understanding the ‘Maori Haka’

Traditionally a ceremonial greeting and a way to energize warriors before battle, the Haka is a significant part of Maori culture. In modern times, it remains a symbol of reverence, performed during pivotal events such as sporting matches, weddings, funerals, and traditional welcomes.

Who is Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke?

At 21, Maipi-Clarke made history by becoming New Zealand’s youngest MP in 170 years. Hailing from Huntly, she manages a Māori community garden and has notable achievements despite her youth, including authoring a book encouraging young people to explore the stars and the moon for self-healing.

Her lineage includes noteworthy figures, and her victory in the recent national elections meant unseating a highly respected and senior MP, Nanaia Mahuta.
