Chennai: In an unusual turn of events for January, several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Nagapattinam, Kilvelur Taluk, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi, have announced a holiday for schools and colleges on Monday due to continuous heavy rainfall. The district collectors made this decision considering the impact of the rain in the region, with Nagapattinam experiencing overnight rainfall leading to the closures.

Despite January typically being a dry month, increased rainfall is attributed to wind convergence caused by a trough, an extended low-pressure area in the easterlies moving inland. Intermittent light rain and mostly cloudy conditions were observed in Chennai on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department predicting heavy rainfall in various districts, including Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet, Vellore in the north, and Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, and Tirunelveli in the south. The possibility of continued heavy rainfall in southern districts on January 9 and 10 is also forecasted.

Stay tuned for more updates on this weather situation.
