Renowned screenwriter Javed Akhtar recently expressed concerns about the trend of commercial success in films with problematic scenes. While not explicitly naming “Animal,” he cited an example from the film involving a controversial bootlicking scene featuring Ranbir and Triptii Dimri.
In response, the “Animal” team tagged Akhtar, asserting that if a writer of his caliber cannot understand the complexities of love portrayed in the film, then his art form is flawed. They emphasized the need for love to transcend gender politics.
Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, “Animal” stirred controversy in 2023 for its graphic content and treatment of female characters. Despite criticism, the film achieved significant box office success, earning ₹900 crore globally.
The team further argued that had a woman asked a man to lick her shoe, it would be celebrated as feminism. They urged to see the characters as lovers and emphasized the betrayal and lies within the context of the storyline.
At the Ajanta Ellora International Film Festival, Akhtar expressed concerns about the societal impact of films depicting problematic behavior, emphasizing the responsibility lying with the audience to decide which films to accept or reject.
