In a heartwarming yet bewildering incident that unfolded in Guang’an, Sichuan province, southwestern China, a young boy surprised his classmate with an unexpected “engagement gift” of two 100-gram gold bars, valued at $15,000 or approximately Rs 12,47,870. The incident, which transpired in December, recently came to light, sparking a mix of amusement and astonishment.

The excited recipient, a little girl, proudly showcased the gold bars to her parents, who were understandably taken aback. A circulating video on Chinese social media captured the girl holding a red box containing the precious gift. When questioned about its contents, the innocent girl responded, “I don’t know.”

Upon learning of the incident, the girl’s parents promptly contacted the boy’s family. According to the girl’s mother, the boy’s parents explained that they had informed their son that the gold bars were intended for his future wife. However, they had not anticipated him secretly gifting them to their daughter. The situation, as described by the girl’s mother, was both amusing and bewildering.

The incident has become a topic of discussion on social media, with users expressing a range of reactions. Some admired the boy’s boldness, noting, “This little boy really has guts, just casually giving away 200 grams of gold like that.” Others questioned if this act was akin to presenting a significant dowry.

Reflecting on similar experiences, one user shared, “My mother-in-law just gave me a bracelet, and my son asked if he could give it to a classmate because he thought it looked nice. I suppose I should be ‘grateful’ he thought to ask me first.” Another recounted, “In the first year, my daughter’s classmate, a boy, gave her 200 yuan in cash. I promptly returned the money to the boy’s parents that same evening.”

This incident follows a trend of unexpected gifts among Chinese schoolchildren, including a kindergarten boy from Shanghai who gifted a girl a Bulgari ring valued at 19,000 yuan in May. When the ring was returned, he offered another handmade ring as a token of affection.
