In a tribute to the renowned Indian scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose, Indian-American physicist-philanthropist Mani Bhaumik has donated one million US dollars to establish the prestigious IEEE Jagadish Chandra Bose Medal in Wireless Communications. This initiative aims to acknowledge the significant contributions of J C Bose, whose groundbreaking work on wireless telegraphy was long overlooked by the West.
The IEEE, based in New York City, had earlier placed a memorial plaque at Kolkata’s Presidency College, where Bose made his pioneering invention. The new medal and award, set to commence from 2025, will recognize promising young scientists for their advancements in wireless communications technologies with global impact.
Bhaumik, a Bengal-born inventor residing in Los Angeles, expressed his gratitude by stating that this contribution is a way of giving back for all he gained from his mentor, Satyendra Nath Bose. Known for his invention of laser technology crucial for Lasik eye surgery, Bhaumik’s donation reflects his commitment to nurturing scientific talent and spirit.
The IEEE Jagadish Chandra Bose Medal will consist of a bronze medal, a certificate, and an honorarium, with the first award ceremony scheduled for 2025. The medal aims to shed light on J C Bose’s vital role in wireless communications, recognizing his legacy and impact on the field.
