In a significant development, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has issued a compelling call to domestic traders and exporters, urging them to suspend business engagements with the Maldives. This comes in the wake of escalating diplomatic tensions between India and the Maldives.

CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal emphasized the unacceptability of offensive comments directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi by the Maldivian ministers. The appeal aims to express solidarity within the business community, showcasing disapproval of such disrespectful behavior. Khandelwal stressed the importance of mutual respect in diplomatic discourse and condemned any form of disrespect towards leaders of friendly nations.

Simultaneously, the Maldivian envoy to India faced summons to the external affairs ministry on Monday, reflecting strong concern over derogatory social media remarks against Modi by Maldivian ministers. The Maldivian government’s suspension of three deputy ministers for their critical social media posts against Modi further adds to the diplomatic strain. These ministers had criticized the prime minister for promoting Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives.

This move has not only drawn criticism within India but has also prompted many celebrities to advocate for exploring domestic tourist destinations rather than opting for the Maldives. The situation remains tense as both nations navigate this diplomatic challenge.
