In the midst of escalating diplomatic discord between India and the Maldives, online insurance platform InsuranceDekho has made a significant move by ceasing the issuance of travel insurance for the Maldives. This decision follows derogatory remarks made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Maldives Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment Mariyam Shiuna.

Yajur Mahendru, the product head at InsuranceDekho, stated on LinkedIn, “We at InsuranceDekho have decided to immediately stop issuance of travel insurance to the Maldives on our platform. We stand united with our country and align with our nation’s interests. It’s time to explore our own island treasures, such as the beautiful Lakshadweep, that beckon with unparalleled beauty and charm.”

This move by InsuranceDekho follows a similar step taken by online travel platform EaseMyTrip, which suspended all Maldives flight bookings and initiated a campaign promoting Lakshadweep.

In response to the derogatory comments made by Maldivian ministers following PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, the interest in traveling to Lakshadweep surged in India. MakeMyTrip reported a remarkable 3400% increase in on-platform searches related to Lakshadweep since the Honorable PM’s visit.

The diplomatic rift has not only impacted travel decisions but has also inspired campaigns promoting Indian destinations, emphasizing the beauty of the country’s own beaches.
