In a significant development, the Ministry of State Security (MSS) in China has detained an individual identified only as Huang, accusing them of spying on behalf of the United Kingdom. Huang, reported to be the head of an overseas consulting firm, allegedly collaborated with Britain’s MI6, engaging in activities related to intelligence collection and identifying potential assets within China.
Huang’s involvement with MI6 dates back to 2015, with the British agency allegedly directing multiple visits to China for the purpose of gathering intelligence. The MSS claims that MI6 provided Huang with training and professional espionage equipment, establishing an exchange for intelligence and communication.
Throughout the course of the investigation, Huang is said to have provided Britain with 17 pieces of intelligence, including information deemed as national secrets. The MSS reported that Huang was granted consular visits, adhering to legal protocols during the investigation.
However, critical details such as Huang’s full name, gender, nationality, and the specific company affiliation remain undisclosed. The British Embassy in Beijing is yet to respond to the allegations made against Huang.
This development occurs amidst China’s extended crackdown on international consulting firms. Previous reports highlighted raids on offices, the closure of establishments, and the questioning of employees. The MSS, traditionally characterized by a low-profile stance, has recently intensified communication efforts. This includes the launch of an account on WeChat, aiming to involve the public in efforts against foreign espionage.
