In a crucial development for Indian cricket, Virat Kohli, the prolific run-getter, reportedly received a definitive understanding of his role in T20Is during a recent meeting in Cape Town with chief selector Ajit Agarkar. This comes ahead of the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, raising questions about Kohli’s T20I approach and role as India gears up for the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.

Kohli’s return, along with Rohit Sharma, has prompted discussions due to their conservative approach during the 2021 T20 World Cup, resulting in India’s group-stage exit. Critics have pointed out Kohli’s struggles against spin, particularly between overs 7 and 16, emphasizing the need for role clarity.

Sources reveal that the meeting in Cape Town aimed to define Kohli’s role in the T20I format, particularly addressing concerns related to his performance against spin bowling. However, there is no confirmation if a similar conversation took place with Rohit Sharma.

The Indian squad is set to convene in Mohali on January 10, and the T20I series against Afghanistan is scheduled to kick off on January 11. As India makes strategic decisions leading up to the T20 World Cup, the clarification of roles is expected to play a pivotal role in the team’s success.
