New Delhi, India: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya introduced the ‘Global Initiative on Digital Health (GIDH) – a World Health Organisation (WHO) Managed Network’ during the G20 health ministers’ meeting in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The initiative was launched in the presence of Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO’s Director-General.

Mandaviya highlighted the significance of Global Initiative on Digital Health, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of G20 nations in integrating digital health initiatives to create a comprehensive ecosystem. The initiative aims to consolidate evidence, enhance global digital health for health systems, and strengthen mutual accountability for future investments.

Dr. Ghebreyesus commended GIDH’s integrative nature and its focus on equity in healthcare. He highlighted how digital health technologies, including telemedicine and AI, have significantly impacted healthcare over the past two decades, with their potential evident during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the G20 meeting, health ministers unanimously adopted an ‘outcome document’ that emphasizes strengthening the global health framework. The document signifies the commitment of G20 countries to building resilient, equitable, and inclusive health systems, with a focus on digital health and modernizing health data. This approach aims to ensure accessibility to safe, quality healthcare services, particularly in low and middle-income countries and small island developing states.

The GIDH initiative aligns with these objectives, aiming to foster a comprehensive digital health ecosystem that improves healthcare delivery, electronic health records, real-time public health monitoring, personalized care, and more. The collaborative efforts of G20 nations and the adoption of the outcome document underscore the global commitment to advancing healthcare through innovative digital solutions.
