Indian opposition parties’ shifting narrative: EVM blame game fades in victory spotlight

The issue of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in Indian elections has been a contentious one, with opposition parties often raising concerns about their integrity when facing electoral defeats. While demands for increased transparency are valid, it is crucial to recognize the dual stance taken by these parties.

On one hand, opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress, TMC, and left parties, frequently blame EVMs when they lose elections to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This consistent narrative of faulting EVMs for losses raises questions about the credibility of their claims.

However, when these same parties emerge victorious, the tone shifts dramatically. There is a conspicuous silence on the alleged flaws of EVMs, and the focus shifts to staking claims to form the government. This inconsistency raises eyebrows and diminishes the credibility of their objections.

The Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to introduce Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines alongside EVMs is a step in the right direction. It addresses concerns about EVM tampering and adds an extra layer of transparency to the electoral process. Mandating the installation of VVPATs at every polling booth across the country is essential to enhance the credibility of the electoral system.

While the opposition’s call to revert to paper ballots may be rooted in skepticism about EVMs, it is important to remember the historical challenges associated with manual voting, such as booth capturing, ballot theft, and bogus votes. EVMs have significantly streamlined the election process, providing faster vote counting and minimizing irregularities.

To foster trust among the Indian electorate, it is imperative for the Election Commission to ensure the widespread implementation of VVPATs. This not only addresses the concerns raised by the opposition but also reinforces the commitment to a transparent and fair electoral system. In doing so, the ECI can strengthen public confidence and uphold the integrity of India’s democratic processes.
