New Delhi, In a revelation that sheds light on the financial intricacies of the Israel-Hamas conflict, Israeli officials assert that Hamas is purportedly receiving a substantial monthly sum ranging between $8 million to $12 million through online donations masquerading as charitable contributions. The surge in funds is particularly notable post the October 7 conflict with Israel, marking a significant uptick in online support for the organization.
Financial-intelligence officials from Israel further suggest that the United States is cognizant of the considerable financial backing Hamas garners from various online platforms. However, tracking these financial movements proves challenging, given Hamas’s adeptness at circumventing sanctions and navigating complex networks.
Matthew Levitt, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, underscores the multifaceted nature of the surge in contributions. Not only has there been an increase in legitimate donations, but illegitimate channels have also emerged, with new charities surfacing and previously designated ones reappearing under altered names. This surge, Levitt notes, provides an enhanced cover for Hamas in managing its financial operations.
The call for financial contributions by Hamas leaders, framing it as “financial jihad,” adds a layer of complexity to the evolving dynamics of funding. Before the conflict, donations were directed through charities, reaching Hamas through various means, including aid convoys. The Israeli officials reveal that Hamas also employs Trade-Based Terror Funding, urging local Gazan business owners to transfer money to support its activities.
However, distinguishing between legitimate charities and those covertly aiding Hamas remains a significant challenge for Israeli authorities. The organization’s fundraising efforts extend beyond online platforms, with funds being raised through entities in other countries that may not have clear links to the group.
This revelation surfaces against the backdrop of Israel’s commitment to dismantle Hamas, following its incursion into southern Israel from Gaza, resulting in considerable human casualties on both sides. The situation remains fluid as efforts persist in unraveling the complex financial networks supporting Hamas.
