The construction of an international bus terminal (ISBT) has commenced in Bairiya, Muzaffarpur, following the capital city Patna in Bihar. The Smart City project, monitored by Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUDCO), has initiated the development of the terminal. The chosen agency has begun work at the construction site, fulfilling the long-awaited expectations of transporters for the beautification of Bairiya Bus Terminal. The project encompasses 7.89 acres of land with an approved budget of INR 137.59 crores from the Smart City company.
According to the prepared Detailed Project Report (DPR), the bus terminal will feature modern amenities such as escalators and dormitories for travelers’ comfort. It will include computerized ticket counters, booking facilities, a restaurant, gaming zone, banks, ATMs, and other conveniences.
The main administrative building of the terminal will be four stories high, with a basement area spanning 4,766 square feet. Inside the stand, buses will be stationed at ten different locations, and the building will also house a workshop. Display boards around the stand will provide information on bus arrivals and departures, akin to a railway station’s announcement system.
The Bairiya Bus Stand, Northern Bihar’s largest bus terminal, will offer both bus parking and car parking facilities. Additionally, arrangements for CNG stations and electric charging points will be incorporated. The two buildings will consist of a four-story structure and a two-story structure. The ground floor will host the control center along with ATM, booking counters, and other traveler amenities. Separate counters will be designated for bus agents.
In front of the bus stand, a Tourist Information Center will be constructed on the land of the Regional Centre for Development of Informatics (RCDI), providing comprehensive details about tourist destinations in Northern Bihar, including Muzaffarpur. Information on air services from trains and Patna will also be available.
Until the completion of construction, buses will operate from the vacant space outside the stand, which was cleared of encroachments. An alternative arrangement will facilitate bus operations from Bairiya Golambar to the temporary bus stand, providing connectivity to destinations like Patna, Motihari, and Samastipur.
The construction commencement has led to the removal of encroachments on both sides of the road from Bairiya Golambar to the temporary bus stand. The opening of bus services from Bairiya Bus Stand to places such as Ayachi Gram will be facilitated through the temporary bus stand on both sides of the road.
Concerns have been raised by the High Court about the deplorable conditions of new bus stands in Patna and the roads near Pataliputra Railway Station. BUDCO has been requested to submit a report on the matter. Additionally, the Transportation Department will introduce a special service to make the journey from bus stands and railway stations to medical colleges more accessible in Bihar.
