Leh, In a bid to shed light on the ground situation in Ladakh, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike for the past two weeks advocating for statehood and constitutional safeguards, announced plans for a border march. Wangchuk, a prominent education reformist, commenced his climate fast on March 6 following unsuccessful talks between representatives of Leh-based Apex body and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and the Central government.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, Wangchuk revealed that 250 individuals braved freezing temperatures of minus 12 degrees Celsius to protect Ladakh’s land, environment, and indigenous tribal culture. He emphasized the encroachment faced by Ladakhi nomads from Indian industrial projects in the south and Chinese intrusion in the north.

In response to these challenges, Wangchuk declared the intention to organize a Border March involving 10,000 Ladakhi shepherds and farmers. This march aims to showcase the real conditions faced by the region.

As part of the ongoing agitation, KDA has called for a half-day general strike and rally in Kargil town on March 20.
