As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections draw near, internal tensions are escalating within the Congress party. Senior leader Anand Sharma has voiced his discontent regarding the caste census, opposing the stance taken by party president Mallikarjun Kharge. Sharma has penned a letter expressing his reservations.

In his letter addressed to Congress’s national president Mallikarjun Kharge, Anand Sharma stated, “In my opinion, the caste census cannot be a panacea, nor can it address unemployment and prevalent inequalities. It will be perceived as disrespecting the legacy of Indira ji and Rajiv ji.”

Congress MP Dr. Sayed Nasir Hussain commented on Anand Sharma’s letter, stating, “Neither on caste nor on creed, a seal will be placed on the hand.” He further elaborated, “We seek votes based on our policies. The party stands with all Indians. Based on caste census data, we can formulate policies for all segments. We have not engaged in caste-based politics.”

Responding to Anand Sharma’s letter, Congress leader Pawan Khera remarked, “Anand Sharma is a senior leader and also a member of the Working Committee. Therefore, if he wishes to discuss anything, he is free to do so.”

Anand Sharma’s objection in the letter comes amidst Rahul Gandhi’s repeated emphasis on the caste census, with attacks on the central government led by Narendra Modi. Rahul Gandhi has also promised that if Congress leads the government at the center, a caste census will be conducted.

Reacting to Anand Sharma’s letter, BJP leader Shahzad Poonawalla commented, “Congress is exposing itself, showing Gandhi-Vadra its mirror, and revealing their true face and hypocrisy… Dividing the country for a few votes, for which they are never committed.” He further added, “Pandit Nehru stopped the caste census, and the Mandal Commission opposed Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.”

The internal discord within Congress over the caste census underscores the complexities of political dynamics as parties navigate through the electoral landscape, grappling with diverse opinions and strategies. As the 2024 elections approach, these internal debates will shape the party’s approach and messaging to the electorate.
