In the realm of Indian cybersecurity, the specter of ransomware attacks continues to loom large, as indicated by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky. The company has raised concerns about the persistence of ransomware attacks in the cyber world of India this year. Nearly two lakh cases of ransomware attacks were reported nationwide last year under the umbrella of unlawful activities.

According to reports from PTI, India remains among the top 12 targeted countries and regions for advanced persistent threats (APTs), according to Kaspersky’s regional director for South Asia, Jaydeep Singh. He emphasized that file encryption has remained a top concern for enterprises and organizations in India for the past three years.

The ransomware landscape transitioned to Ransomware 3.0 in 2017, witnessing attacks that involve exfiltrating targeted devices from services, reselling data, and resorting to public blackmail.

Such attacks have significant implications for the financial and reputational aspects of Indian companies, Singh added. Kaspersky claims to have identified over two lakh ransomware attacks on businesses in the country in 2023 alone.
