In the midst of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the entry of the “inheritance tax” issue has stirred up a heated debate between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress. Indian Overseas Congress President Sam Pitroda brought the issue to the forefront, advocating for its implementation in India, drawing aggressive criticism from the BJP and sparking a contentious exchange between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Congress.
What is Inheritance Tax?
Inheritance Tax, also known as Estate Tax, is imposed on the property left behind by a deceased person. It entails taxing the assets left to heirs, with a portion going to the government. While this system is prevalent in the United States, only certain districts in India enforce inheritance tax, with provisions for exemptions, particularly for spouses and children.
Pitroda’s Remarks on Inheritance Tax
During a television program discussing American inheritance tax, Sam Pitroda highlighted the system in the U.S., where only 45% of an estate valued at $10 million would go to the children, while the remaining 55% would be claimed by the government. He proposed a similar system for India, drawing the ire of the BJP, which accused the Congress of planning to burden the middle and aspirational classes.
BJP’s Response
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman criticized the Congress’s plan, suggesting that it would adversely affect the middle and aspirational classes by depriving them of the ability to pass on their savings to their children. She characterized the Congress’s agenda as a scheme to impose taxes on both income earned during life and inheritance after death, targeting the middle and aspirational classes.
Modi’s Criticism of Congress
Prime Minister Modi seized on Pitroda’s statements to launch a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing the party of advocating for a policy that would deprive individuals of their hard-earned wealth, both during their lifetime and after death. He portrayed the Congress as a party focused solely on looting the country’s resources, both in life and death.
Congress’s Defense
The Congress Party distanced itself from Pitroda’s remarks, asserting that they did not reflect the party’s official stance. Pitroda clarified that his comments were taken out of context and that he was merely discussing the American inheritance tax system as an example. The party emphasized that it has no intention of implementing such a tax policy in India.
In light of the escalating controversy surrounding the inheritance tax proposal, it remains a contentious issue in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, shaping the discourse on economic policies and taxation in India.
