In a recent podcast with Zerodha founder Nikhil Kamath, Bill Gates discussed the future impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the software engineering industry. Despite AI’s revolutionary potential, Gates reassured software engineers about their job security.

“The amazing thing about this technology is that we know it can help in key areas, and we know it can create educational tutors. We have seen several projects in India and the US that are showing great results. The potential is incredible if we knew that all it did was make jobs more productive,” Gates said, highlighting AI’s positive impact on education and other fields.

Addressing concerns about AI taking over jobs, Gates called such worries “alarmist,” stating that the demand for software engineers will continue. He acknowledged the possibility of AI replacing all jobs in the distant future but considers this unlikely within the next two decades.

Gates also reflected on his company’s long-standing relationship with India, praising the country’s talent and contributions to Microsoft’s success. He mentioned the challenges India faces, such as poverty and a backlogged legal system, but expressed optimism about AI’s potential to improve productivity and justice.
