The onset of the monsoon is being felt in Bihar, although the Meteorological Department has not yet confirmed it despite rain in the Seemanchal-Ang region. Rivers in the Seemanchal area are swelling, raising the imminent threat of floods. Heavy rainfall in Nepal has exacerbated the situation, causing Bihar’s rivers to overflow. Residents and authorities are now on high alert as the risk of erosion intensifies. Several diversions and roads have been cut off, severing contact with district headquarters. The Araria-Galgalia New BG railway line also faces the threat of washouts. Rising river levels in Purnia, Katihar, and Kishanganj have left people anxious.

Seemanchal Rivers Overflow, Flood Threat Intensifies

The Mahananda River in Seemanchal is overflowing. Heavy rainfall on Tuesday in the Indo-Nepal border area has raised the water levels of the Kankai and Budhi Kankai rivers in Bihar. In Kishanganj’s Dighbalak block, water is flowing over the Hathidubba, Hafiztola Haruwadanga, and Rahimuni diversions.

Kishanganj’s Torrential Rain Creates Havoc, Cemeteries Flooded

In Kishanganj’s Kochadhaman, while the rain has provided relief from the heat, it has also caused rivers to swell, leading to severe erosion problems. The rising water level of the Mahananda River is threatening roads and even cemeteries. After alerting about the national highway 327 E, there is now concern over the Araria-Galgalia New BG railway line. Boat operations have been suspended on many rivers, causing significant travel difficulties for residents.

Purnia’s Rising River Levels

In Purnia district, water levels are also rising rapidly. Intermittent rain in the Amaur block has increased the water levels of the Kankai, Parman, and Bakra rivers by up to five feet. The flood threat is looming over several villages. In Gyanodov Panchayat’s Ward Number 7, the Kankai River has started to wreak havoc, endangering the house of former Mukhiya Farooq. People in the area are now dismantling their homes. Severe erosion is seen in villages like Simil Wari, Nagartol, Paithan Toli, and Laltoli. In the Baisi block, the Mahananda, Kankai, and Parman rivers are overflowing, continuously raising water levels and increasing concerns for villages along the Mahananda River.

Katihar Faces Flood Threat as Mahananda River Swells

Due to heavy rainfall in Nepal’s Terai region, the Mahananda River in Katihar district has also risen, heightening the flood threat. Water is now infiltrating lower areas, complicating fodder collection for livestock. Fields and farms are now inundated with floodwaters.
