In a notable response to the controversy surrounding Canada’s recent allegations implicating Indian officials in the assassination of a Khalistani terrorist, Australia has expressed its deep concern. Australia, a member of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) alongside India, Japan, and the United States, as well as part of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance with Canada, has officially raised this matter with its Indian counterparts.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, speaking in the Canadian parliament, stated that his government possessed “credible allegations” linking the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist, in June to “agents of the Government of India.” India has vehemently rejected these allegations as “absurd and motivated.”

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong acknowledged the concerning nature of these reports, emphasizing that investigations are ongoing. While she did not disclose specific actions regarding the issue within the Quad, she emphasized Australia’s commitment to respecting the sovereignty of all nations and upholding the rule of law.

Regarding concerns about foreign interference from India in Australia, Minister Wong highlighted Australia’s robust democracy and its support for the peaceful expression of diverse views, including those of the Indian diaspora. She also emphasized the importance of safeguarding Australian democracy from external influences.

Details of how Australia conveyed its concerns to India and any information shared by Canada were not disclosed, as the minister chose not to delve into specifics. However, she confirmed that Australia has been closely monitoring the situation and has raised concerns with India.

This diplomatic dispute has led to the expulsion of diplomats from both India and Canada, with India refuting the allegations and stating that they are baseless and politically motivated.
