In a recent address to the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stirred global attention by raising the matter of Kashmir. During his speech, delivered on September 19, Erdogan emphasized the significance of fostering peace, stability, and prosperity in South Asia, underscoring the importance of a just and lasting peace in Kashmir achieved through dialogue and cooperation between India and Pakistan.
“As Turkiye, we will continue to support the steps to be taken in this direction,” President Erdogan affirmed. This statement followed his recent meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 Summit in New Delhi, where both leaders discussed bolstering trade and infrastructure relations.
Furthermore, President Erdogan expressed his pride in India’s role within the United Nations Security Council and advocated for the expansion of the Council’s permanent membership. He proposed the elevation of five permanent members and 15 “temporary” members to permanent status on a rotational basis, reflecting the need for a more inclusive representation beyond the existing five permanent members.
This is not the first time President Erdogan has drawn attention to the Kashmir issue on the global stage. In 2021, he similarly addressed the matter during the UN General Assembly session, voicing hope for peace and prosperity in Kashmir. However, this stance faced criticism from India, which deemed it “completely unacceptable,” emphasizing the importance of respecting the sovereignty of nations.
President Erdogan’s recent statement underscores Turkey’s continued interest in South Asian affairs and its commitment to facilitating peaceful resolutions to regional conflicts. His proposals for UN Security Council reforms also highlight his aspiration for a more equitable global diplomatic landscape.
As this diplomatic discourse unfolds, it remains to be seen how this call for dialogue and reform will shape future international relations and discussions surrounding the complex Kashmir issue.
