In a diplomatic development that has sparked international attention, the White House has expressed “deep concern” over allegations that Indian agents may have been involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist leader, in Canada. National security spokesman John Kirby urged India to fully cooperate in any investigation related to this matter.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently revealed that domestic intelligence agencies were actively pursuing credible allegations linking agents from New Delhi to the fatal shooting of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June.
“We are deeply concerned,” stated Kirby regarding these allegations. He went on to emphasize, “We encourage India to fully cooperate.”
The government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vehemently denied any involvement in Nijjar’s murder, intensifying the diplomatic tensions that have been brewing for some time, primarily over Sikh separatist activities in Canada.
Kirby clarified that reports suggesting the U.S. rejected or dismissed Canada’s allegations are entirely false. He stated, “There’s been some press speculation out there…that the United States rebuffed Canada in terms of talking about their investigation, and I just want to stress that those reports are just flatly false, untrue.”
The Washington Post reported that Canada had previously requested its closest allies, including the U.S., to publicly condemn the killing of the Canadian citizen, but these requests were reportedly declined.
The murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, was privately raised by senior officials from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing nations in the lead-up to the recent Group of 20 summit in New Delhi. The Five Eyes alliance includes Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the U.S., and Canada.
Canada’s foreign ministry also refuted claims that they had sought allies’ public condemnation of Nijjar’s murder and were subsequently rebuffed.
This complex and sensitive diplomatic situation continues to unfold, with implications that extend beyond national borders.
