Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh – In a momentous occasion during the foundation stone laying ceremony of the International Cricket Stadium in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi bestowed cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar with the prestigious Indian cricket team jersey. The event, which took place on a Saturday, witnessed the Prime Minister’s gracious gesture in front of a captivated audience.
The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, exhibited its commitment to the project by investing a staggering sum of Rs 121 crores for land acquisition, setting the stage for the stadium’s development. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) pledged an impressive Rs 330 crores towards the construction, underlining the magnitude of this endeavor.
The stadium’s architectural theme draws inspiration from the divine aura of Lord Shiva. Spectators can expect to be enthralled by crescent-shaped roof covers, trident-shaped floodlights, seating reminiscent of traditional ghat steps, and Bilvipatra-shaped metallic sheets adorning the facade. With a capacity to accommodate 30,000 spectators, it promises to be a true spectacle.
The ceremony witnessed the presence of luminaries from the cricketing world, including former Indian cricketers such as the batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Dilip Vengsarkar, and Ravi Shastri.
Among the dignitaries attending the event were BCCI president Roger Binny, BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla, and BCCI secretary Jay Shah, emphasizing the importance of this historic moment.
