In a momentous parliamentary session, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered an unequivocal and formal apology, addressing a recent episode where, albeit unintentionally, the Canadian legislature extended honor to a Ukrainian World War II veteran who had once fought alongside the Nazis.

The incident, as reported by AFP, transpired during the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, leading to significant upheaval within Canada. Subsequently, this led to the resignation of the Parliament’s Speaker and resulted in diplomatic tensions.

Mr. Trudeau, in his address to lawmakers, declared, “I would like to present unreserved apologies for what took place on Friday and to President Zelensky and the Ukrainian delegation for the position they were put in, for all of us who were present.”

He acknowledged that the inadvertent recognition of this individual was an egregious mistake and a grievous violation of the memory of those who suffered greatly at the hands of the Nazi regime.

This statement by Mr. Trudeau comes in response to a regrettable occurrence during the recent visit of Ukrainian President Zelensky, which stirred a significant controversy, culminating in the resignation of the Parliament’s Speaker on Tuesday. The incident unfolded during Zelensky’s visit to Canada, intended to bolster Western support for Ukraine in its ongoing struggle against the Russian invasion, as reported by AFP.

While Zelensky was in attendance as a distinguished guest, the Speaker, Anthony Rota, extended recognition to the elderly veteran, characterizing him as a hero of World War II. This gesture resulted in an enthusiastic standing ovation but subsequently revealed that the veteran had been associated with a military unit linked to the Nazi regime.

As per the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, the veteran had served in the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, a military unit with a well-documented record of crimes against humanity during the Holocaust.

The incident triggered swift reactions, with Rota tendering his resignation, expressing profound regret for his error and the distress it caused to Jewish communities, both in Canada and beyond.

The Canadian government, led by Mr. Trudeau, faced intense scrutiny in the aftermath of this episode, with opposition leader Pierre Poilievre characterizing it as the “biggest single diplomatic embarrassment” in Canada’s history.

The incident also provided an opportunity for Russia to amplify its narrative that the Ukrainian government, led by President Zelensky, has affiliations with neo-Nazi elements. Moscow has consistently propagated this narrative through its state-controlled media, seeking to justify its invasion of Ukraine to the Russian populace.

The Russian Ambassador to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, criticized the “disturbing commemoration” and urged Prime Minister Trudeau to apologize to Moscow for the involvement of the veteran and his unit in “numerous war crimes” against the Russian population.

Canada is home to one of the world’s largest Ukrainian diasporas, second only to Russia in terms of size.

Mr. Trudeau emphasized, “I also want to reiterate how deeply sorry Canada is for the situation this put President Zelensky and the Ukrainian delegation,” signaling that Ottawa had already initiated contact with Kyiv and President Zelensky to offer apologies.

This incident, while deeply unfortunate, has also been politicized by Russia, serving as false propaganda to undermine Ukraine’s struggle for freedom.

It remains a matter of concern how such a grievous error found its way into the Canadian Parliament’s proceedings, highlighting the importance of meticulous scrutiny in such official recognitions.
