LONDON- In a remarkable League Cup encounter on Wednesday, Newcastle United upset Manchester City with a 1-0 victory, securing their place in the fourth round. Their reward for this triumph is a challenging clash against the reigning champions, Manchester United, a team that had defeated them in last season’s final.

The decisive moment of the match came when Swedish forward Alexander Isak broke the deadlock in the second half at St James’ Park. This turn of events was in stark contrast to the first half, where Manchester City dominated possession but failed to capitalize on their opportunities. However, in the 53rd minute, Isak capitalized on a low cross from Joelinton and slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Manchester City, who had clinched the treble of Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup in the previous season, had harbored hopes of achieving an unprecedented quadruple. Yet, those dreams were swiftly extinguished with their exit from the League Cup. Notably, this marked the third consecutive year that City, who had won the competition four times consecutively from 2018 to 2021, bowed out early.

City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports television, praised his team’s performance, despite the outcome. He acknowledged Newcastle’s goal and congratulated the opposition on their victory, noting the contrast to their previous season’s League Cup performance.

Elsewhere in League Cup action on Wednesday, Brighton & Hove Albion faced elimination, falling 1-0 to Chelsea. Aston Villa and Brentford, too, tasted defeat at home against their top-flight opponents, Everton (2-1) and Arsenal (1-0) respectively.

Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson ensured their progress to the next round, setting up a clash with Blackburn Rovers. Meanwhile, Everton’s James Garner and Dominic Calvert-Lewin sealed an impressive win over Aston Villa, earning Everton a home match against Burnley.

Arsenal secured their spot in the next round with a narrow 1-0 victory against Brentford, setting up an away game against West Ham United. Liverpool, nine-time winners of the League Cup, fought back from an early deficit to beat Leicester City 3-1 at Anfield. Their reward is an encounter with Premier League counterparts Bournemouth, who advanced with a 2-0 win over Stoke City.

In another fixture, Fulham triumphed 2-1 at home against Norwich City, with Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi finding the net on his first start for the London side. Fulham’s next challenge will be a visit to Ipswich Town.
