A recent account in Walter Isaacson’s biography sheds light on one particularly audacious incident involving Musk’s decision-making at Starlink.
Musk’s propensity for swift personnel changes became evident when he assumed leadership at Twitter (now X) and promptly replaced the then-CEO and several top executives. This swift action resulted in a significant overhaul of Twitter’s workforce.
However, Isaacson’s book offers deeper insights into Musk’s leadership approach. In the summer of 2018, during a challenging period in his life, Musk sensed that something was amiss at Starlink, his satellite internet venture. He believed that the satellites being developed at Starlink were excessively large, costly, and cumbersome to manufacture. His vision was clear: satellites needed to be produced more efficiently and at a fraction of the current cost.
Despite Musk’s conviction, the Starlink team did not share his perspective. In an unorthodox move, Musk made a sudden visit to Seattle one Sunday night and took a drastic step – he terminated the entire top-level team at Starlink without prior warning. In their place, he brought in eight SpaceX rocket engineers, individuals with limited experience in satellite production but possessing the problem-solving skills and adaptable mindset that aligned with Musk’s vision.
Another striking facet of Musk’s leadership, detailed in Isaacson’s book, is his penchant for setting seemingly impossible deadlines and driving his teams to achieve them. This approach, while daunting, has often yielded results across Musk’s various ventures.
For instance, after a series of rocket failures at SpaceX, Musk issued an almost implausible six-week deadline for the team to prepare a new rocket. This timeline was particularly daunting considering that the preceding rocket preparations had taken 12 months and 17 months, respectively, for their respective launches. Despite the initial skepticism, Musk’s insistence on challenging deadlines propelled SpaceX to overcome obstacles and meet his demanding expectations.
