New Delhi, October 3, 2023 – In a recent development, the Supreme Court has dismissed a plea put forth by the Hindu Personal Law Board, led by its president, Ashok Pandey. The plea sought the official recognition of ‘Ram Sethu,’ famously known as Adam’s Bridge, as a national monument of historical significance.

‘Ram Sethu’ comprises a series of limestone shoals connecting Pamban Island, situated off the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu, to Mannar Island, located off the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. This geological formation carries immense cultural and religious significance within the Hindu tradition.

The plea had an additional request for the construction of a protective wall at the ‘Ram Sethu’ site, presumably to safeguard its heritage value.

This matter was brought before a bench of esteemed Justices, namely Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia, who, after due deliberation, declined to entertain the plea.

The ‘Ram Sethu’ holds a unique place in both archaeological and religious contexts, with its intricate history intertwined with Hinduism and the laws governing heritage preservation.

For further insights into the geoheritage value of ‘Ram Sethu,’ we encourage readers to explore related topics in archaeology, religion, and belief.

As the legal discourse unfolds, this issue continues to be of great importance to various stakeholders and remains a topic of interest across the nation.
