In an unprecedented turn of events, Janata Dal (United) MLA Gopal Mandal of Bihar found himself in the spotlight on Tuesday, October 3, as he made a striking entrance to the Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH) in Bhagalpur. The reason for the commotion? Mandal was seen carrying a loaded revolver in his hand while accompanying his granddaughter, Avni, for medical treatment.

Mandal justified his startling choice of accessory as a measure of self-defense. However, this act, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, has ignited a firestorm of public outrage. Netizens have voiced their concern, labeling it a resurgence of ‘gundaraj’ or ‘jungleraj’ in the state of Bihar, casting shadows on the law and order situation.

Responding to the mounting criticism, MLA Gopal Mandal defended his actions by asserting his legal possession of the firearm, accompanied by the requisite license. He pointed to the precarious environment he faces, citing threats from criminal elements and political adversaries. Mandal bluntly stated his readiness to use the weapon to protect himself.

Mandal, a politician known for his controversial actions, has previously issued threats to a doctor and a DSP, further adding to his notoriety. Despite these antics, he continues to command a significant following, particularly among his caste-based voter demographic.

This incident has ignited a broader debate about the role of firearms in public spaces and the overall security climate in the state of Bihar.
