Apple to Launch Made-In-India iPhones on Release Day for the First Time

In a significant departure from its previous strategy, Apple Inc. plans to offer the India-manufactured iPhone 15 on the global sales debut day, marking the first time an India-assembled device will be available for purchase on the launch day. This move underscores India’s growing production capabilities and reflects Apple’s shifting approach of selling new devices primarily produced in China to customers worldwide.

Although the majority of iPhone 15 units will still originate from China, this development highlights Apple’s commitment to narrowing the production gap between its operations in India and its primary manufacturing hubs in China. Apple initiated iPhone 15 production at a Foxconn Technology Group facility in Tamil Nadu last month, solidifying its commitment to the Indian market.

While this transition signals India’s increasing importance in Apple’s diversification efforts, there may be slight delays in the availability of India-made devices due to unforeseen logistics challenges. Apple has not provided an official comment regarding these developments.

The iPhone 15, set to be unveiled at Apple’s US headquarters, is expected to be the most substantial update to the device in three years. It will feature camera system enhancements across the entire range and an improved 3-nanometer processor for the Pro models. The success of the new lineup is crucial for revitalizing Apple’s sales, which have experienced a decline in recent quarters due to subdued consumer demand in key markets like the US, China, and Europe.

Apple’s strategic shift towards increased local manufacturing aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s financial incentives to boost domestic production. Additionally, other Apple suppliers in India, such as Pegatron Corp. and a Wistron Corp. facility soon to be acquired by the Tata Group, are also expected to start assembling the iPhone 15.

With the opening of its first stores in India this year, Apple views the rapidly growing Indian market as both a retail opportunity and a vital production base for its devices in the long term. In the quarter through June, iPhone sales in India achieved double-digit growth, reaching record levels, although specific figures were not disclosed by Apple.
