The central government has approved the expansion of the Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Station (NSTPS) in Aurangabad, which is fully owned by NTPC.

Stage Two will see the addition of three new units, each with a production capacity of 800 MW. Tenders have been issued for this project, and it is expected to be completed by 2029.

This expansion will significantly benefit Bihar, reducing its dependency on power projects in other States

Stage One Already Benefitting Bihar

Currently, three operational units in Stage One of the Nabinagar Power Station produce a total of 1980 MW, with Bihar receiving 1634 MW, which is 82.5% of the production. With the addition of three new units, NSTPS’s total production capacity will increase from 1980 MW to 4380 MW. This 2400 MW increase will elevate NSTPS’s status from a super thermal power station to a mega thermal power station.

While Bihar’s quota for Stage Two hasn’t been determined yet, based on previous agreements, Bihar could claim up to 1485 MW of the additional 2400 MW.

NSTPS to Become the Second Largest Power Project in India

Upon completion of Stage Two, NSTPS will become the second largest thermal power project in India. Currently, Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station is the largest, producing approximately 4800 MW. The central government’s approval involves an investment of over 25,000 crore INR, marking the largest investment for any project in Bihar to date.

Significant Benefits for Bihar

The Stage Two project at NSTPS will be particularly advantageous for Bihar, addressing its power needs without relying on other states’ power projects. With the tender process completed, construction can commence immediately, as the project already has 1400 acres of surplus land. Existing infrastructure such as railway tracks, water pipelines, and cooling ponds will be utilized, requiring only partial expansion for Stage
