In a substantial alteration ahead of the IPL 2024 season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given the green light for bowlers to deliver two bouncers per over. This rule adjustment, successfully trialed during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, is anticipated to elevate the competition’s intensity between batsmen and bowlers in the upcoming IPL season.

According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, the BCCI has already sanctioned the rule change, marking its implementation in the IPL 2024. Indian pacer Jyadev Unadkat expressed enthusiasm about the amendment, emphasizing its potential impact on the dynamics between batsmen and bowlers.

Unadkat shared, “I feel two bouncers an over is very much useful, and I feel it’s one of those things which gives the bowler an added advantage over batsmen.” He highlighted the strategic advantage for bowlers, especially in situations where slower bouncers are employed, providing an element of surprise to the batsmen.

Exploring its impact on the auction strategy, Unadkat mentioned, “The rule could impact the 10 franchises’ mindset as well as they look to get in some of the top pacers from the auction.” The likes of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Geral Coetzee, and Josh Hazlewood may witness increased competition due to this rule change.

The rule adjustment not only broadens the bowlers’ arsenal but also introduces a fresh dimension to the death overs, allowing varied options such as yorkers, slower balls, and bouncers.
