Patna, Bihar has rolled out an ambitious Electric Vehicle (EV) policy, encouraging residents to opt for electric cars and bikes. Under the Bihar Electric Vehicle Policy 2023, buyers stand to benefit from a remarkable 75% discount when registering their preferred electric vehicle. The substantial incentive is aimed at promoting the adoption of eco-friendly transportation options.

Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agrawal shared that discounts would be applicable for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, including light and heavy electric vehicles. For the first 10,000 registered two-wheelers and the initial 1,000 four-wheelers, a 75% discount on vehicle tax is promised. After this initial phase, buyers will still enjoy a 50% discount on registered EVs, making immediate vehicle registration a lucrative option for a tax reduction of up to 75%.

Additionally, three-wheeled electric vehicles are eligible for a 50% discount on vehicle tax during purchase and registration. The notification also outlines a complete waiver of the vehicle tax for heavy electric vehicles, including cars and commercial vehicles, for up to two years from the date of issuance.

Subsidies up to INR 1.50 Lakhs

Apart from tax incentives, the policy provides direct financial support for EV buyers. Those falling under the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories can avail a subsidy of INR 10,000 for two-wheelers. In other categories, buyers receive a subsidy of INR 7,500 per vehicle. For three-wheeled electric vehicles, SC and ST buyers receive a subsidy of INR 1.50 lakhs per vehicle, while other categories enjoy a subsidy of INR 1.25 lakhs.

The state government aims to encourage electric vehicle adoption by developing parking facilities and ensuring access to affordable electricity. Each city is expected to have a dedicated parking plan, and construction for road parking and economical charging infrastructure will be initiated.

In a progressive move, Bihar’s Electric Vehicle Policy positions the state as a pioneer in fostering sustainable and environmentally conscious transportation choices among its residents.
