With the onset of April, Bihar is experiencing soaring temperatures and a decline in groundwater levels in various regions. Serious water scarcity issues are being reported in several parts of the state, prompting government intervention efforts.
In districts such as Kaimur, Jehanabad, Munger, Jamui, Bhagalpur, Gaya, Nalanda, Patna, Rohtas, and Nawada, groundwater levels have witnessed a significant decline. Complaints of water scarcity and malfunctioning borewells have emerged in areas like Kaimur, Jehanabad, Gaya, and Nawada, while private borewells in Patna are experiencing reduced water pressure.
To address these challenges, authorities have intensified water conservation efforts, particularly in critical areas. However, despite these measures, discrepancies in water availability persist within the same wards, necessitating increased monitoring and reporting by trained officials.
In response to the escalating water crisis, the government has ramped up efforts to provide water to critical wards through water tankers, water ATMs, and mobile water supply units. However, certain regions like Sitamarhi, Samastipur, Madhubani, and Darbhanga continue to face acute water shortages, with some areas witnessing a deterioration in the situation over the past two years.
To streamline water management efforts, officials have been divided into four zones, with each assigned specific responsibilities for monitoring groundwater levels and implementing corrective measures. Additionally, training programs will be conducted to enhance the capacity of personnel tasked with addressing water scarcity issues.
Looking ahead, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a long-range forecast indicating below-average pre-monsoon rainfall for April in Bihar, accompanied by above-normal temperatures. The state is bracing for an increase in the number of hot days, with certain regions in South-West Bihar likely to bear the brunt of heatwaves.
While the IMD forecast suggests a challenging period ahead, proactive measures and concerted efforts by authorities are essential to mitigate the impact of the water crisis and ensure the well-being of Bihar’s residents.
