Bhagalpur: The PG Botanical Garden at TM Bhagalpur University is set to come back to life. Plans are underway to rejuvenate the garden by revitalizing the drying medicinal plants, with work expected to commence soon. The Botany Department aims to produce 11 species of endangered medicinal plants found in Bihar and Jharkhand. This proposal has received green signal from ICAR and the Botanical Survey of India. A funding of around 3 million INR will be allocated to the department for this endeavor.
Dr. SK Chaurasia, the head of the department, has been appointed as the project in-charge with a deadline to complete the project by 2027. During this period, efforts will be made to work on 11 species of medicinal plants either extinct or on the verge of extinction in Bihar and Jharkhand. Initially, these plants will be cultivated in the department’s garden, followed by production in subsequent phases. Dr. Chaurasia mentioned the involvement of 12 universities across the country in this project, including TM Bhagalpur University.
Project Objective:
The aim of the project is to make medicinal plants accessible to the people, enabling the treatment of various diseases. Additionally, it will contribute to conserving nature. Some plants are unable to thrive in the local environment, for which a polyhouse will be established in the department to facilitate their production.

These plants will be beneficial in treating various diseases, including diabetes, skin diseases, respiratory diseases, arthritis, diseases affecting women, and heart-related ailments.
The Botanical Garden’s Recognition in Asia:
According to the former head of the department, the garden has been cultivating medicinal plants for many years. There are over a hundred species of such plants, which can prove to be helpful in treating various ailments. Plants like Tulsi, Vakas, and Giloy are among those being cultivated.
