In a significant development announced during the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet in Chennai, chip designer Qualcomm revealed its plans to bolster its presence in the city. The company is set to establish a new design centre, signifying a proposed investment of Rs 177.27 crore. This initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities for up to 1,600 skilled professionals, reinforcing Qualcomm’s commitment to technological advancements and its contribution to India’s vibrant workforce.

The newly envisioned design centre will specialize in wireless connectivity solutions, focusing on innovations complementing Wi-Fi technologies. Additionally, it will actively contribute to Qualcomm’s global Research and Development efforts in 5G cellular technology. This strategic move underscores Qualcomm’s determination to remain at the forefront of the wireless communications industry.

Savi Soin, President of Qualcomm India, emphasized the pivotal role the new design centre plays in shaping global connectivity, particularly within India. The centre aligns with Qualcomm’s commitment to ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India,’ fostering collaboration with Indian technology partners and accelerating the adoption of new technologies in the market.

Mahesh Moorthy, Vice President of Engineering and Head of Qualcomm Chennai Design Center, acknowledged the significance of Tamil Nadu in propelling Qualcomm’s technological advancements. With a rich pool of skilled professionals, exceptional educational institutions, and a focus on innovation, Tamil Nadu is positioned to elevate Qualcomm’s technological strides to new heights.

This expansion signifies a milestone in Qualcomm’s journey, marking its dedication to India’s technological landscape and reinforcing its position as a key player in wireless communications.
